We did it! Due to the Soberanes Fire we had to cancel the expedition, but on September 29th, the Regional Parks Department opened, after being closed since July.
Our residents loaded into The Cottages van and headed south on Highway 1 to Palo Corona where we met Jackie & Debbie of the Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks Department in front of an old white barn that was built from locally milled redwood.
We then loaded in the Parks Department van and started our expedition. We toured the wetlands area near the Carmel River with its wild blackberry vines, willows and cotton wood trees. Then we moved further into local oak woodlands with their majestic trunks and branches. Up the steep mountain we went (you can see the mountain road from The Cottages of Carmel). At the top we visited the pond area.
From the higher points we could see Rancho Canada Golf Course, The Cottages, The Barnyard Shopping Center and the Pacific Ocean from Point Lobos to Pebble Beach and the white sand of Carmel River State Beach. What a beautiful sight to behold!
Our residents returned to The Cottages and shared their expedition with other residents. We are planning a November trip because the September trip was so special!
