While we take pride in the care and services provided to our residents, hearing from those we serve is our greatest testament.
Testimonial – Bill Dorey (Son)

Dear Holly (Executive Director),
It has been four months since the passing of my mother, Thelma Dorey, and I am writing to ensure that the management staff and residents at The Cottages know how much all the Dory’s appreciate the kindness and care mom received during the time she lived with you. As you probably remember, she was one of your oldest residents, having arrived in her 99th year. She had been suffering from low kidney function and had just been released from CHOMP. She was not strong enough to return to her home in Watsonville and continue to live alone., which was her preference. The Cottages served as a very convenient “temporary living facility” since it is located not far from home in Carmel. With some urging from me, she reluctantly moved in with a goal of rebuilding her strength and moving back to Watsonville as soon as possible.
She did not intend to stay long so she initially saw no reason to participate in many of the activities and social functions. But she soon made friends, and it was not long until she began to enjoy Bingo, jewelry making and meeting her new friends for meals in the restaurant-like dining room. She was able to see me almost every day, and my brothers who live in Southern California visited on a regular basis. It wasn’t long till she began to think of The Cottages as her home. She underwent a full hip replacement in her 99th year and not long after her 100th birthday, she fell and broke her femur. In both instances, we were concerned that we might have to find a skilled nursing facility to provide the specialized care she needed to recover. The Cottages, however, worked with us and she was able to get what She needed despite being mostly bedridden for several months after her fall. You and your staff were terrific and very accommodating.
During the time my mom lived at The Cottages, I spent a great deal of time there and I can make some well informed observations. From cheerful Laurel at the reception desk, to Julie the supervisor, Kathy the activities director, Lacey her favorite nurse, and Dena her hair stylist, your staff brings a sense of joy to their work which is critical to making The Cottages home to its residents. The food is good and the care and services first class. The residents seem happy and many of them are Giants fans. My mom was a Giants fan and was happy that she had someone to talk about what Bruce Bochy, the Giants manager, should have done in the 7th when they lost.
After living almost two years at The Cottages, mom asked us to sell the family home. She had decided to not move back to Watsonville. She had made The Cottages her home. Thank you for all you did for mom and the care you provided her. We were lucky to find such a well-managed assisted living facility in our backyard.
Very truly yours,
